April 2007
An energetic team of 8 volunteers traveled to Koforidua, Ghana (in West Africa) to deliver a container of 250 wheelchairs and other mobility equipment. The team included wheelchair seating specialists, wheelchair mechanics, therapy and nursing students and international travelers. The team was in country for 10 days and were unfortunately unable to deliver the equipment that was shipped to Ghana. The equipment was stuck at the port in a customs battle. The team was successful however in making countless home visits to rural villages, many of which had never seen a person with Caucasian skin before. The team had many wonderful experiences interacting with the local people, conducting disability assessments and making suggestions for therapeutic exercises to increase people's functional abilities.
